Video Game Violence and Youths by Cory Fisher

Video game age restrictions are in place for a reason. Kids that play violent video games are more likely to become violent, right? Well, according to an article by Dr. Brad J Bushman on ithp.org, it's true. In the past there have been studies upon studies conducted to find out whether playing violent video games can actually change someone's behavior and the time has come when enough data has been collected that a conclusion can be drawn. If video games have the ability to improve your hand-eye coordination, help cope with depression, and start cult followings, then they definitely have the potential to change one's behavior in a negative way as well.

So why are there still so many kids playing violent video games? There are specific safeguards in place to prevent underage children from playing video games that are not appropriate for their age-group. The ESRB video game rating system is the main defense against this problem. It also puts all of the responsibility on the minor's parents/guardians. But, even though most parent's these days know that if a video game is rated M for mature it is most definitely not suitable for their 12 year old, they might still end up buying the thing for them. This could be a testament to the persistence of kids when it comes to getting whatever it is they desire, or it could be a testament to the weak will of the parents when it comes to being a "cool" parent rather than providing for their children in a responsible way.
