Dead before it was even alive

On November 21st 1998, Nintendo released their Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Almost overnight, the game instantly became a phenomenon, being acclaimed as the Best Game of All Time. Two short years later, Nintendo released the Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask which was a direct sequel to Ocarina of Time. Just like Ocarina of Time, Legend of Zelda fanatics fell in love with Majora’s Mask, selling three million copies. That was 14 years ago; technology has advanced beyond the capabilities of the Nintendo64, the console that the Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask were released on. With the creation of the portable console Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo has taken it upon themselves to resurrect old console games and bring them to the portable gaming market.

In 2011 Nintendo remade the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and brought it to the Nintendo 3DS with enhanced graphics and 3D capabilities. Just like the original, the new 3D iteration sold extremely well. Selling over 2.5 million copies to date, the new Legend of Zelda: Ocarina 3D is the third bestselling game on the Nintendo 3DS. It’s clear that this was a right decision. Remaking the Ocarina of Time increased sales, pleased Zelda fans, sold 3DS consoles, and brought new gamers to the Legend of Zelda franchise.

Many fans of Ocarina of Time want Nintendo to remake Majora’s Mask in the same way as the Ocarina of Time was ported to the 3DS. The hopes of fans are that the remake will produce the same results as the remake of Ocarina of Time, which will benefit Nintendo. Unfortunately, Nintendo has stated that they are still deciding between making Majora’s Mask or A Link to the Past. A year and a half after the release of Ocarina of Time 3D and Nintendo still has had no immediate plans to remake Majora’s Mask. Remaking Majora’s Mask can only do good for Nintendo, after the remake of Ocarina of Time 3D they created a new audience of gamers who never had the chance to play the original Majora’s Mask. Remaking the game will increase sales and preventing fanatics from thinking their voice is not being heard.

The quest to get Majora’s Mask onto the Nintendo 3DS has grown to a global scale. If gamers want to show their support, they just have to join Operation Moonfall and sign the digital petition. Operation Moonfall already has 50,000 signatures and thousands of more supporters. Hopefully Nintendo will recognize their fans and produce the game in the near future.
