Futuristic, Medieval Era?
By Christian Zannetti

When did caring about the continuity of a game and making sure it made sense go out the window? I know I didn't live during the Renaissance and what we were taught in school wasn't 100% accurate, but I know that they didn't have the technology to craft laser walls and giant mech-suits. I've played a few games now where I've gotten half way through the game and not know what century I was in or if this was just some crazy fictional nonsense. I know games aren't always totally accurate to their time frames, and they shouldn't be, but I don't think I should be dual wielding pistols in the medieval era.
A game I picked up the other day called "Dishonored" was not what I had thought. Through game trailers and word of mouth from friends, I was under the impression that this game took place during the renaissance or close to that era, but when I begin playing and am instantly killed by a "Wall of Light" I begin to second guess my self. The "Wall of Light" is a giant security system that projects a wall of lasers that disintegrates anything that walks through it. Oh, did I forget to mention that it is powered off of whale oil? I mean come on, the whale oil I can live with, but really? A giant laser wall? Not to mention the mechanical chicken-walker type suits they have some guards suited with. Here I am running around with a freakin flint lock pistol and a crossbow and these guys have laser walls and mech suits. Yeah, seems fair.
This isn't the only game that has serious continuity errors with the time frame. Even the "Fable" series had some issues with advanced science in a medieval era, and like I said, I understand it's never going to be totally accurate but I don't think it's fair to have advanced technology and not give an explanation as to why the good guys don't have the same tech as the bad guys.
