Nathan Boyes – Let's chillax a bit maaaaan.
People seem to get a sense of joy out of telling people how much they hate something. As much as I try to avoid it, even I have fallen into this at times. This industry is all about entertainment, things that make us happy, but if we can't stop being so hateful about everything we see we are going to grow up to be a rather unpleasant community.
I remember when I was younger I would wake up and go to school and all I would talk about is how great a video game I liked was. I focussed on the Joy I got out of playing a game, and just ignored the games I didn't like. I still like to fallow this example, but it grows harder and harder as more people join in the hate game. People are social, they like to join in the conversation others are having, not only that, but we like to agree with others as well. If the general public of game players all talk about their hatred towards games they don't like, then it's hard to avoid talking about it yourself.
Even so, saying what you don't like about a game is fine, but the level of extremes people will go to is ridiculous. Anita is a perfect example of people going too far. She didn't even make a game; all she wanted to do was talk about what bothered her in the current state of the market, its target audience being mostly male. Before she could even get her little documentary out she received a stream of hate messages. It's ok to have an opinion, and wanting to share your views is not something you should deserve so much hate for. People need to be able to take what they listen to and decide whether or not they agree with it. If they agree, great, continue living on with your life, feel free to spread your views and debate about it. If you disagree the same thing is acceptable, debate about it, tell people why you think it is wrong, do not just go "I hate you for having an opinion I disagree with."
Another kind of hatred is when two games are incredibly similar in gameplay, but feature small differences. People who play Dota usually hate LOL, people who play LOL usually hate Dota. When I mention a games name and immediately hear a bunch of people moaning it bothers me. Every person likes different things and should be allowed to enjoy the games they like without disgust. Others should be allowed not to like a game without people thinking their ridiculous for not enjoying it, too each their own!
If people can learn to debate or walk away the video gamers' culture will be more respected among others. Keeping things light hearted and fun, even when talking about things you don't enjoy will keep everyone a little happier, and quite possibly encourage the talk of what people like about games more then what they hate!
