Once again EA has dawned its sword and shield to combat video game
piracy, this time it's using a shitty "always-on DRM" (digital rights
management). If you know anything of the history of DRM, Diablo 3
tried to do something like this. In short, it was not well liked among
the gaming community, and it brought a lot of problems to Blizzard.
You may ask, what is always-on DRM? Well, it's EA's way of checking in
on you while you game, to make sure that you paid for the game, and
that you aren't doing anything that they wouldn't approve of. It
wouldn't be so bad if it was just DRM, but this is always-on DRM. As
it states the DRM is always on, as in you must be connected to the
internet if you want to play this game. Even in single player mode,
you must be connected to the internet so the game can contact the EA
servers at all times.
When you pay $60 you want to be able to get the game and start playing
it as soon as possible. With always-on DRM if their servers go down
for whatever reason, you're out of a game till the servers come back
up. If EA ever crashes, and they are force to shut down their severs,
well there goes your $60. With their Always-on DRM, they will screw
any of their customers, and drive away any potential customers.
