Would a new Grand Theft Auto game every 2 years degrade the series and lower quality? What about a new game in the series every year? How fast can a company make a game like Grand Theft Auto IV, or Red Dead Redemption? What about Downloadable Content that is purchased after the games release? What about GTA Games that hit handheld devices, though those are rare.
Take-Two Interactive, the owner of Rockstar Games, says that it "doesn't make sense", and is not even really possible, at least with the quality of Grand Theft Auto games they try to produce. I somewhat disagree, on the basis that I feel as though Rockstar diverts its attention to other projects when really all anyone wants is another Grand Theft Auto game on a console. Did I wish for L.A. Noire? No, but I get they want to be creative and make projects they want to make, and I did buy that game. Did I wish for a sequel to Red Dead Revolver? Yes, because I loved Red Dead Revolver.
But all of these things, I'm still convinced, divert attention away from making the next real Grand Theft Auto game. The saddest thing is Grand Theft Auto V is expected to come out in September, but two new consoles will likely be released this holiday season, and I would love to play GTA V on a PS4 (not that I want to buy a PS4, because it costs more money than I have at any given time.)
So does releasing too much of the same game degrade a series' value, make players lose interest? Will quality deteriorate? I expect so. I can think of some good examples, but in the end, we don't need examples to know it's true, because it's obvious. If you are releasing a game every year in the same series, we all can see it's to make money and not to make the perfect game. I ought to cite Star Wars and Disney as an example here. You should know what I'm talking about.
In the end, Take-Two Interactive is clever, reminding everyone that Rockstar releases high-quality games, which it absolutely does. Do they take a long time to make? You bet they do, but it's only because they're actually trying to make more than just a disc with a game on it worth $60, they're making our dreams come true. Our dreams of... well, dealing drugs, stealing cars...
