It's cool to see that imagination is still a key ingredient to making video games. If you think about video games as a basic concept, it's just a moving and interactive picture; this makes it pretty easy to formulate different ideas of what to make the actually game about. The hard part is refining the idea so it actually works and so it's a fun and new enough of an idea that people will want to play it over and over again. So basically to make a game you need a new creative and intriguing style of art, well guess what, that's everywhere you look and listen. Music is art, Cars can be art form, and even books are an art from. All of these different Medias are a way for people to express themselves and get their creativity out, well game designers can gain inspiration from all of these different mediums and turn them into an alternate reality. A reality where that book you just read is now real life or that car you just saw is now the car you drive at top speeds running from the cops.
Video games are an alternate reality that is based of an actual reality, and its those games that make for a fun and interesting play. Some of the best games out today are based off of the media we see on a regular basis, such as BioShock. A lot of the inspiration for this game came from a book written by Erik Lawson called The Devil in the White City, which has absolutely nothing to do with the story line from BioShock. In fact the two are complete irrelevant from each other, but the designer saw a bit inspiration in that book that helped him make these great series we all know. Even the games that we play that are truly taken right from movies or books still have inspiration elsewhere. A recent game called Tomb Raider has a few things they can attribute to different characters from movies such as Alien's and Die Hard. John McClane and Ripley were big influences to Lara, along with the movie The Decent which influenced the game setting a lot.
Video games are everywhere and I don't mean in the homes of every person, I mean in the lives of every person. It's kind of funny how much we over look that, video games are an alternate reality, but we have to make the actual reality first before the imaginative one comes into play.
